VA adds Chief AI Officer, VISN 15

With a wealth of experience exceeding 20 years, Richard “Spencer” Schaefer assumes the pivotal position of Chief AI Officer at the Department of Veterans Affairs, Veterans Integrated Services Networks (VISN) 15, building upon his previous role as the Chief Health Informatics Officer. Spencer brings a versatile skill set encompassing Health Informatics, Solution Architecture, MuleSoft Anypoint Platform, and Project Management. His expertise extends to leveraging emerging technologies, traditional and super cloud architecture, human factors, and data science in the development of end-to-end healthcare technology solutions. Spencer’s strategic leadership and profound understanding of healthcare technology make him a key contributor to Veterans Integrated Services Networks (VISN) 15 in advancing AI and health informatics initiatives.

Prior roles include:

  • Chief Health Informatics Officer – VA
  • AI Solutions Architect – VA National Artificial Intelligence Institute (NAII)
