OBJECTIVE: The goal of NCI’s NanCI project is to enhance the cancer research training experience by providing an Artificially Intelligent Virtual Assistant or AI Bot for navigating the trainees’ journey. NanCI will provide the NCI trainees with timely, targeted information about opportunities to learn, connect and achieve research goals via real-time access to a continuously increasing community and library of user-relevant events, papers, and people. The NanCI project will inspire all trainees to network and relate with peers and mentors in a professional and social context. It will include a mobile-friendly experience that leverages existing NCI and NIH communication channels and tools. This NanCI project will empower all members of the NCI training community as well as support efforts to make cancer research more equitable, diverse, and inclusive.

SCOPE: Contractor shall improve the capabilities, features, and functions of NanCI (AI Bot) in three sequential phases: 1) Connecting: NanCI as an information repository and resource to connect users to scientific content and other users; 2) Recommending: NanCI as a recommendation resource based upon the individual user’s engagement with NanCI and declared interests; 3) Interactive Learning: adults learn best when interacting with material, and NanCI will empower this mode of learning leveraging AI and social networking. Several requirements shall be performed concurrently, and some shall continue throughout the entire contract period.
