13 Small Businesses Leading the Way in Federal Healthcare Interoperability

AEGIS

With past experience in supporting health information technology infrastructure for standards development and testing at NIST to Virtual Lifetime Electronic Record work at VA, AEGIS has a very strong and focused set of interoperability experience for a small business. From its Developers Integration Lab to its reference implementation, WildFHIR, AEGIS is realizing the vison of its Founder, Mario Hyland, as it aims to be a key part of the interoperability solution.

JP Systems

JP Systems is well known for its work at ONC and VA. From assisting the ONC with the Federal Health Information Model to supporting development of VA Terminology Standards and VLER interoperability specifications, JPS is in the middle of some of the key initiatives in setting Federal specifications for interoperability. JPS, its leadership and technical team, plays an active role in defining international HIT standards for message transmission and other healthcare functions.

Audacious Inquiry – 8(a)

Since 2013, Ai has provided technical and project management services in support of the ONC Standards Implementation and Testing Environment (SITE) project which includes Ai supporting the SITE platform VA/ONC FHIR pilot. Leveraging their BPA for Program Support for the ONC Office of Standards and Interoperability and the Office of the Chief Privacy Officer, Ai will play a continued role as ONC looks to take advantage of their interoperability and programmatic expertise.

Lantana Consulting Group

Lantana Consulting Group (formerly Alschuler Associates) provides services and software for standards-based health information exchange. Lantana developed and posted the first online validator for HL7 CDA and the first CDA Quick Start Guides. Lantana has historically supported industry standards workgroups from HL7 to ONC to HIMSS, and they continue to develop and make available presentations, documentation and tools that advance the industry.

CPS WOSB

CPS was an early stage prime O&M support contractor for the congressionally mandated DoD and VHA Federal Health Information Exchange (FHIE) and Bi-directional Health Information Exchange (BHIE) program. CPS developed a solution, currently utilized to integrate DOD and VA medical imaging systems, that enables the seamless integration of medical image data between disparate medical systems and networks, using Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) concepts and technologies.

NiyamIT

NiyamIT employs newer approaches to acquire, execute, analyze, store and retrieve health data, and make it secure and interoperable for health information exchange. NiyamIT is part of the IBM/Epic bid to replace DOD’s Electronic Health Record in the Defense Health Management Systems Modernization (DHMSM). With special expertise in novel technologies such as Natural Language Processing (NLP), NiyamIT turns free or structured text into computable concepts, for use in clinical decision support, population health, rare and chronic disease management, pharmacovigilance, and bio-surveillance.

Cognitive Medical Systems – SDVOSB, EDWOSB

Cognitive Medical has extensive experience in healthcare interoperability and standards, particularly with healthcare semantics and the emerging Nationwide Health Information Network (NwHIN). Cognitive Medical specializes in standards-based, advanced concept software solutions for healthcare organizations and they maintain domain and field experience in designing, implementing, and integrating medical service oriented architectures for the VA, DoD, and HHS.
