VA Sources Sought: Determining User Needs, Recruitment Strategies, and Engagement for Digital Mental Health Apps for PTSD and Dysregulated Anger

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Office of Information & Technology (OIT), *National Center for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (NC-PTSD) strives to provide high quality, effective, and efficient Information Technology (IT) services to those responsible for providing care to the Veterans at the point-of-care as well as throughout all the points of the Veterans’ health care in an effective, timely and compassionate manner VA depends on Information Management/Information Technology (IM/IT) systems to meet mission goals.

Work efforts in support of this contract will be aligned to support VA NCPTSD. The three projects described below focus on two key trauma-related conditions affecting Veterans: PTSD and dysregulated anger that have associated evidence-informed apps developed. The projects are preparatory for two upcoming grant submissions through: (1) supporting two Veteran-centric needs assessments for PTSD and dysregulated anger mental health apps  (Project 1: Anger Needs Assessment and User Interviews for AIMS app and Project 2: PTSD Needs Assessment and User Interviews for PTSD Coach app) and (2) supporting a pilot study for procedures using two mobile mental health apps using different psychological principles for addressing dysregulated anger (Project 3: AIMS and MARI – Addressing Dysregulated Anger Pilot Study).

Projects 1 and 2 target recruiting 75 up to 100 Veterans for each app to complete the survey and to schedule 8 up to 10 needs assessment interviews. Project 3 recruitment target is 20 up to 25 Veterans per app for a 4-week pilot trial. For Project 2 (PTSD Coach) US Veterans who are fluent in English, report clinically significant PTSD symptoms (as determined by a PTSD Checklist-5 total score of > 25), and own their own mobile device (e.g., smart phone or tablet) will be recruited. For Projects 1 (dysregulated anger survey) and 3 (anger apps pilot), recruitment criteria include Veterans who are fluent in English, report clinically significant PTSD symptoms (as determined by a PTSD Checklist total score of > 25) and who report clinically relevant anger symptoms (as determined by a STAXI-2 Trait Anger score of > 20 or a DAR-5 score > 12), and who own a mobile device (e.g., smart phone or tablet) will be recruited.
