Medium: Veterans Health Administration (VHA) Innovation Ecosystem and precisionFDA Launch their COVID-19 Risk Factor Modeling Challenge

The Challenge:

“To better understand the risk and protective factors for severe COVID-19 illness among the Veteran population, the VHA Innovation Ecosystem and precisionFDA launched the ‘COVID-19 Risk Factor Modeling Challenge’ on June 2, 2020. Challenge participants will utilize synthetic Veteran health records as training data sets to develop machine learning and artificial intelligence models that predict health outcomes, including COVID-19 status, length of hospitalization, ICU admission, invasive mechanical ventilation status, and mortality (Figure 1). The challenge will run through July 3, 2020…”

Final Thoughts:

“Through this challenge, additional risk and protective factors for severe COVID-19 illness will be investigated These include therapeutics prescribed for preexisting comorbidities, as well as treatment interactions. The challenge results are anticipated to improve the identification of the risk and protective factors for COVID-19 and the classification of illness severity in both Veteran and civilian populations. These results will help the healthcare system better prepare and implement patient care approaches, and will complement the findings of other modeling studies such as the COVID-19 EHR DREAM Challenge.” Read the full article here.
