Newly named chairman of the House VA Committee on the future of VistA and Bob McDonald staying on?

VA COMMITTEE CHAIR-TO-BE ROE IS SO OVER VistA: Rep. Phil Roe, the newly named chairman of the House Veterans’ Affairs Committee, has one item on his VA agenda for sure: changing VistA. “We have to convince the VA administration to move toward a new EHR.”

VistA, Roe said, “is a legacy system,” and while he understands the difficulty of implementing a new EHR, it makes no sense for the VA to continue to develop its own product. “If you go commercial you don’t need your own IT department that builds all these packages for scheduling, billing, none of which talk to each other. Just get it off the shelf like DoD has done.”

Jeff Miller, Roe’s predecessor, is still a candidate for the job, Roe believes. “It could be that [current VA secretary] Bob McDonald stays a while.”
