The Veterans Health Administration (VHA) is the United States’ largest integrated health care system and is positioned to anticipate and lead emerging health care trends. The Chief Nursing Informatics Officer (CNIO) is a key member of the senior executive leadership team of the organization, involved in strategic planning, organizational assessment, and program development.

Duties:

  • Provides executive management and strategic direction for the EHRM IO, including serving as an interface with executive management and external stakeholders, securing funding for program initiatives, and selecting and assigning Health Informatics staff.
  • Uses specialized knowledge and expertise to represent VA and VHA interests and activities to internal and external organizations involved in development of electronic health records and interoperability standards for health information exchange.
  • Develops and implements clinical informatics strategies that directly affect the quality and usability of VA and VHA health data and health information systems nationwide. Devises strategies and plans for implementation of emerging standards for electronic health records and interoperability.
  • Responsible for managing the development, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of multiple programs. This includes setting long- and short-range goals, acquiring and allocating resources, developing policies and procedures, developing an approach and methods for evaluating program success and outcomes, and monitoring program execution.
  • Manages complex issues and events related to and oversees programs to identify trends in clinical practice, delivery models/environments, and their interrelation with electronic health records, personal health records, bar code technology, human factors and usability as well as health information exchange, internal and external to VHA.
