Summary
The Associate Chief Nursing Informatics Officer is of an executive nature delivering transformational leadership within the nursing informatics specialty which intersects information science, computer science, and health care. This position is located within the VHA Office of Health Informatics, Office of Nursing Informatics.
Duties
The Associate CNIO leads the design and delivery of information to improve clinical care, individual and public health. The Associate CNIO promotes the development and implementation of VHA Veteran-centered information technology and data standards to support VA and Department of Defense interoperability and health information exchange initiatives. The Associate CNIO champions consumer health informatics, promotes emerging technologies, and advances standards development within common data models that support terminologies, messaging, common document standards, security, and national code sets. With a focus on transformation, the Associate CNIO serves as a primary leader to ensure successful modernization of VHA’s electronic health record and information systems. Major duties include:
- Collaborates with health care executives in creating the organizational mission and vision. Directs the integration of nursing or nursing related activities in the mutual development and achievement of organizational goals.
- Provides leadership and oversight of people, processes, and technology/products that comprehensively support each phase of the system development life to improve the delivery of health care to Veterans across the healthcare continuum.
- Promotes solutions that address the business needs of clinicians with the goal of advancing evidenced-based clinical practice and interprofessional Veteran-care delivery.
- Responsible for daily operations; analyzes issues and develops strategies to support the mission and strategic goals of VA and facilitates action plans related to national VA health informatics strategic goals.
- Develops strategic plans and interprofessional health care initiatives to meet the needs of a national and/or VA health care network, as well as public policy, by emphasizing patient centered care across the continuum of health care settings.
- Informs and leads collaboratively with VHA Program Offices, Veterans Integrated Services Networks (VISN’s), facility leadership teams, nurse executives, professional organizations, consumer groups and internal and external stakeholders to address complex healthcare delivery and informatics practice issues.
- Represents as a nursing informatics leader within VHA at national, regional, and federal healthcare organizations or meetings for the purpose of forecasting, defining, evaluating information on healthcare, research, and analytics/informatics policies.
- Communicates and fosters effective labor management partnerships and workforce diversity goals within a complex healthcare system.
- Accepts specific, special assignments for designated/distinct areas of focus within the organization upon request.
