CDC seeking Deputy Director Principal, National Center for Health Statistics

“As the Deputy Director Principal the incumbent will: 

  • Plan, coordinate and evaluate the total vital health, and health-related statistics programs of the National Center for Health Statistics. 
  • Providing national and international leadership in vital and health statistics and epidemiology. 
  • Coordinate the National Center for Health Statistics technical and scientific activities and initiatives with public and private health statistical agencies. 
  • Oversee and provide guidance on the Public Health data standards and health classification programs. 
  • Ensure that the National Center for Health Statistics data systems produce information needed by the Department of Health and Human Services to monitor change in health status and health care in response to legislation and Departmental Initiatives. 
  • Research new scientific techniques and methods that can be implemented to improve the National Center for Health Statistics data collection methodology, survey methodology, data quality and reliability and statistical computation. 
  • Oversee the advancement of knowledge and application in the core areas of measurement, collection, analysis, and dissemination of data and health statistics. 
  • Foster support for the National Center for Health Statistics through consultation with experts in the fields of mathematical statistics and statistical analysis, survey design and methodology, cognition and survey measurement, questionnaire evaluation and design, small-area-estimation, missing-data and survey non-response, combined data, data quality, and data dissemination and confidentiality. 
  • Provide overall direction of the National Center for Health Statistics’ analytics program ensuring that it serves policy makers and researchers throughout the Executive and Legislative Branches of government with information on challenges and progress in meeting the country’s health and health care needs, on the quality of care, and the use of statistical tools that enables the National Center for Health Statistics to efficiently disseminate its data and studies and a set of critical reports. 
  • Ensure that Federal, Health and Human Services, and the Center for Disease Control’s technical requirements and infrastructure are capable of supporting the National Center for Health Statistics’ data collection activities in a manner that maximizes data access, visualization, and dissemination. 
  • Coordinate and provide technical direction in the application of statistical and data science for data analysis and dissemination activities of the Center. 
  • Improve the dissemination of NCHS by developing publications and data access systems to meet the wide range of user needs including early release products. 
  • Coordinate data collection strategies and efforts through HHS Data Council, the National Committee on Vital and Health Statistics, the National Center for Health Statistics Board of Scientific Counselors (BSC) and the Interagency Council on Statistical Policy to develop and adopt data collection standards, develop and adopt practices to protect confidentiality, and address specific interests, problems or needs.”
