Government Matters Video: Cyber executive order is a “game changer,” says Department of Veterans Affairs official

“Officials at the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) say they have no evidence of data loss after the SolarWinds hack. President Biden signed an executive order last month to boost U.S. cyber defenses after high-level cyberattacks.

  • Gary Stevens, executive director for information security policy and strategy at the Department of Veterans Affairs, said the executive order is a game changer as it brings forward the concept that cybersecurity needs to have a seat at the table in the decision-making process.
  • Stevens said his department uses enhanced monitoring of east-west and north-south connections and works with the Department of Homeland Security and the intelligence community to get in front of indicators of compromise, monitor and respond.
  • Stevens said the VA is “laser focused” on meeting deadlines from the executive order and has an advantage due to some of the work already done…” Watch the video here.
