Responsibilities:
The ODSET director serves as the principal advisor to the NIAID director and senior leadership on the development of a strategic framework for the expanding data sets generated by NIAID-funded basic and clinical research; represents NIAID as the senior bioinformatics and data science leader at national and international meetings and workshops; and oversees and manages office operations and staff.
In addition, as an expert advisor on identifying and implementing key scientific priorities and initiatives for NIAID in data science, including data management infrastructure and advanced computational tools, the incumbent serves as the associate director for data science reporting to the NIAID director.
The ODSET director provides senior scientific expertise in data science, bioinformatics, omics, clinical informatics, mathematical modeling, predictive signatures of health and disease, and precision medicine and related technologies and uses experience in applying this expertise to infectious and/or immune-mediated diseases to leverage large-scale and diverse data and expedite new knowledge to turn basic and clinical research discoveries into clinical applications. The incumbent has the following responsibilities:
- Leads the development of data-driven solutions with multidisciplinary teams to understand clinical needs and diseases, using predictive modeling and analytics to enhance clinical decisions
- Provides leadership in U.S. and international data sharing, access, and release efforts related to findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable (FAIR) principles, security, privacy, and data ownership
- Creates an environment for sharing basic and clinical data sets for scientists, clinicians, and patients
