MAXIMUS recruits HHS Public Health & Epidemiology SME as new Vice President, Public Health Strategy

Dr. Andrew Sommers has joined MAXIMUS Federal to support the Company’s efforts to assist government with expanding the public health infrastructure across the U.S., including the Company’s federal work with CDC and HHS and state work supporting increased testing and contact tracing. He joins MAXIMUS from the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), where he was a Senior Policy Advisor in the Office of Health Policy, Assistant Secretary for Planning and Education (ASPE). In this role, he managed a portfolio covering epidemiologic investigations into infectious diseases such as hepatitis, Zika, and Ebola.

Dr. Sommers brings expertise in GIS, telehealth payment reform, and pharmaceutical regulations. Prior to ASPE, Dr. Sommers worked for the Congressional Research Service, Office of Domestic Social Policy, as an analyst in public health and epidemiology where he drafted major sections of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), policy briefings, and testified at Congressional hearings. He also worked for the Epilepsy Foundation of America as Senior Director of Government Affairs, as well as the Research Triangle Institute and AHRQ.

Prior roles include:

  • Senior Social Scientist – U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS)
  • Analyst in Public Health & Epidemiology – Congressional Research Service
