EHR Intelligence: Senate Committee Passes Bill for Increased VA Transparency

“After the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) announced it will delay the launch of its new EHR system, the Senate Veterans Affairs Committee passed a bill that requires the VA to keep its federal IT dashboard updated and report to Congress on IT projects that cost more than $25 million over three years, according to The Business of Federal Technology…”

“Not only does the committee want the VA to keep its dashboard up to date and Congress updated on projects, but the bill also wants the agency’s CIO to be hands on with budgeting, IT workforce development, strategic planning, emerging technologies, and investment management…”

“In November 2019, VA initially assured the committee that the EHR system would launch at Mann-Grandstaff VA Medical Center in Spokane, WA by the end of 2019. Then, it was pushed back to late March 2020.”

“However, more recently the VA announced that the EHR deployment would be delayed until further notice. And according to the VA’s 2021 budget proposal, the organization plans to spend $2.6 billion on both the EHR deployment and IT infrastructure upgrades.”

“But according to Federal News Network, the training and subsequent deployment could be pushed back through the end of April or May due to the configuration issues with the unfinished product…” Read the full article here.
