For the last 5 weeks, patients of the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) have been able to access their medical information on Apple iOS devices, following the VA’s announcement on 11/6/19 that it will support connections from a user’s Health app on their iPhone to the VA’s electronic health record (EHR) system. To date, over 16,400 veterans have utilized this capability.
The Health app, which is pre-installed on all Apple iPhone devices, serves as a user-friendly way for patients to view their medical information from any participating healthcare organization in a single, longitudinal view. Apple Health Records leverages the Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR) standard to aggregate data elements from disparate EHR systems, healthcare organizations, and providers. Apple launched its FHIR-compliant Health Records feature in its iOS 11.3 operating system update.
