“The House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs Subcommittee on Technology Modernization held a hearing today to discuss the future of scheduling at the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and implementing a commercial off the shelf scheduling solution.”
“As part of its modernization efforts, the VA is adopting a permanent scheduling solution as part of its electronic health record modernization (EHRM) effort. After attempting to develop their own solution, the VA announced in Dec. 2018 its intention to use the Cerner Scheduling Solution (CSS) for scheduling on an accelerated timeline, due to the ‘return on investment in productivity and efficiency.’ While the scheduling solution will not start implementation until the first EHR implementations begin, the scheduling solution will be deployed at most sites before Cerner’s EHR.”
“In her opening statement, Chairwoman Susie Lee, D-Nev., highlighted the struggles the VA has had in its 20-year effort to update its patient scheduling system and noted that the logistics of the currently planned implementation have not been clearly ironed out.”
“A solid chunk of the hearing was focused on discussing the failed scheduling systems that the VA either tried to develop or implement in the past – namely the VistA Scheduling Enhancements (VSE), which the VA began deploying in May of 2014…” Read the full article here.
