“Fence Post Problem” threatens interoperability in the VA Cerner implementation

“…Some friendly Vistacrats sent us the following video from an OSEHRA EHR Architecture meeting where a presenter (starting at minute 45 or so) discusses the “fence post problem”—a standards issue that arises in EHR implementations and could threaten interoperability in the VA Cerner implementation if, in their rush to meet deadlines, the implementers fail to assure terminologies are harmonized among the various installations. The presenter, Stephen Hufnagel, suggests that Cerner was perhaps too accommodating about incorporating what each of the four Pacific Northwest bases wanted, which made connecting them together more complicated…” Read the full newsletter here.
